Chapter 14 – Is It Possible to Earn Well in Brazil?
One of the most common questions I get when talking about a technical career is: “Can you earn well in Brazil without becoming a manager or working abroad?”
One of the most common questions I get when talking about a technical career is: “Can you earn well in Brazil without becoming a manager or working abroad?”
The answer is: yes, it is possible.
But “earning well” needs to be understood within the context of the Brazilian market, which has its own characteristics, different from what we see in the US or Europe.
The Brazilian Scenario
-
Salaries vary by sector: Fintechs, e-commerce, and global companies pay better than traditional industries. Growth-stage startups tend to pay more aggressively to attract talent.
-
Difference between product companies and consultancies: Product companies value Staff Engineers as strategic roles. Consultancies generally have stricter salary caps.
-
Geographic concentration: SP and RJ concentrate a good part of the high-paying jobs. But with the growth of remote work, there are already national and global opportunities accessible from anywhere.
What Does “Earning Well” Mean?
In Brazil, a senior developer can range between R$ 12k to R$ 20k CLT (formal employment).
Staff/Principal roles can reach R$ 25k to R$ 35k CLT, depending on the company.
As a Contractor (PJ), these values can jump to R$ 30k to R$ 50k monthly, especially in fintechs or international companies hiring from Brazil.
Compared to the US (where Staff can earn over USD 200k/year), it might seem lower. But in terms of local purchasing power, a Staff Engineer in Brazil is already in the top 5% of the country’s income.
Strategies to Grow in Brazil
-
Right Sector: Seek fintechs, digital banks, local big techs, and unicorns.
-
Valued Specialization: Cloud, FinOps, security, high-scale messaging. These themes are scarce and pay above average.
-
Active Networking: Many high-level vacancies are not published on portals. Relationships in communities, meetups, and LinkedIn open doors.
-
Contractor (PJ) and Remote: Evaluating PJ contracts can double your income, although it brings less stability. Remote work opened doors for direct contracts with international companies.
Metaphor: The Market as Real Estate Terrain 🏠
Think of the tech market as different neighborhoods in a city:
-
Some appreciate fast (fintechs, global startups).
-
Others remain stable, but with a lower ceiling (traditional consultancies).
Your salary is the “rent” paid for the land where you built your career. Knowing where to invest your energy is just as important as being technically good.
Common Mistakes
-
Expecting your current company to recognize your value forever: The market moves faster than internal promotions.
-
Comparing only with US salaries: The ruler must be local purchasing power + quality of life.
-
Ignoring PJ or hybrid opportunities: Many professionals limit their income out of fear of leaving formal employment (CLT).
Practical Examples
Case 1 – The settled senior: Stayed for years in the same consultancy waiting for recognition. The salary stagnated at R$ 12k, even delivering at a high level.
Case 2 – The Strategic Staff: Moved to a fintech in São Paulo, remote PJ contract. In less than 1 year, jumped from R$ 18k CLT to R$ 40k PJ, with autonomy to choose high-impact projects.
Practical Exercise
-
Research today: which sectors in Brazil are paying the most (fintech, healthtech, e-commerce)?
-
Compare your current salary with the market average.
-
Define a target: what remuneration would you like to reach in 12 months?
-
Outline 2 concrete actions to get there (change sector, PJ contract, specialization in a scarce area).
Staff Insight
“Earning well in Brazil is possible. But it requires strategy: choosing the right sector, negotiating contracts, and not depending solely on your current company.”
Practical Checklist
-
Do I know how much my role is worth in the market today?
-
Do I know the sectors that pay the most in my area?
-
Have I evaluated alternatives like PJ or international remote?
-
Am I clear on how much I want to earn and in what timeframe?
-
Am I willing to change companies or contract models to achieve this goal?
👉 In this chapter, you understood that it is indeed possible to have high remuneration in Brazil, but that this depends on strategic choices, not just waiting for promotions. In the next one, we will broaden the horizon: how the market works outside Brazil and how you can prepare to act internationally.
